John Henry IRELAND 1899 - 1918

John Henry, a local lad who joined up for duty in The Great War, was wounded in France during the second Battle of the Somme. He was brought home and was looked after in a hospital in Newport, Monmouthshire, where he later died. His burial was in Wreningham.

Notes:During World War I, Newport, Monmouthshire, had no dedicated military hospital like some of the larger cities. It did, however, have several auxiliary hospitals and convalescent homes that were set up to support the war effort and provide care for wounded soldiers. These facilities were usually smaller and were situated in existing buildings like schools or convalescent homes, some run by the Red Cross. No specific establishment has been linked to John Henry’s care
